Wagwan people! Fadlan (or NinjaTea) checking in here: co-founder & current acting no3 at Blockchain Sensei & current CEO of our subsidiary company SHURiKAN SOUNDS - a Web3 music solutions & blockchain music label enterprise. This is my 1st ever blog publication via Blockchain Sensei website, and simultaneously SHURiKAN SOUNDS’ 1st blog publication ever. Please tweet us any feedback on this article!

This article is mainly intended to educate:

  • Musicians of all genres - particularly those who are non web3 native (i.e. not so ‘in’ crypto)

  • Anybody who some way, shape or form works, or is interested in working within the music industry…

… (To educate the above on) :

    • What exactly is Web3?

    • Why should musicians & music industry people care about Web3?

      • i.e. how is Web3 (Blockchain, AI, tokenisation, NFTs) shaking up the music landscape?

    • What can musicians & music industry people do right now to prepare themselves for this music industry shift?

So let’s go!

What exactly is‘Web3?’?

There is no dictionary definition of the word ‘Web3’ unfortunately. Instead of thinking of Web3 as a specific ‘thing’, think of Web3 as an a idea for a new iteration of the worldwide web. Speaking on behalf of a large proportion of the crypto community, here’s a 101 educational guide to understanding Web3:

  • Web 1.0 was the early internet - (1989 until 2004ish) - static information websites that were ready only

  • 2004 saw the birth of Web 2.0 - social media and user generated content (Facebook, Youtube, Twitter)

    • The problem with Web 2.0? - Over centralisation and cencorship cough we know about being ‘cancelled’ on social

  • Only becoming a buzzword in the mainstream consciousness as of 2021, Web 3.0 was a term coined around 2014 by ex Ethereum co-founder Dr Gavin Wood (now Polkadot). Today in 2023, Web3 is generally accepted as the idea of utilising technologies such as Crypto, NFTs, AI, blockchain and decentralisation in a practical, fair, ethical and democratic way

Why should musicians & music industry people care about Web3?

Every musician and everyone involved in the music industry should be paying attention to Web3 because emerging technologies such as crypto, NFTs, AR & VR (i.e. performing  in the metaverse) has created unprecedented opportunities for musicians to:

  • Connect with their audiences in innovative never before seen ways

  • Opened up completely new avenues for musicians to get discovered and tap into new audiences

  • (possibly most importantly) Restructure the paradigm possibilities of musicians getting paid more for their music

    • not only ‘paid more’ but paid in perpetuity (i.e forever) by turning songs into unique digital collectibles, tradeable on an open market

      • Imagine your favourite song of all time - Now imagine that song had say 1000 unique official digital collectibles that couldn’t be faked (so like digital trading cards) - And by owning at least 1, you as a fan received benefits including (but not limited to) free concerts, discounts and the ability to resell the digital collectible for profit

How can I get involved in Web3 Music?

The 1st thing to do when starting to get involved in anything new, is to join a community of people who are already doing what you’re interested in getting involved into!
